Tarpon fishing in Tampa Bay is by far my favorite type of fishing. You could say that I am obsessed with Tarpon and that would be putting it lightly! The level of respect I have for these pre historic creatures is beyond anything I could possibly explain. Tarpon travel to tropical and sub tropical regions, they migrate here from the Florida Keys, spend time here feeding and spawning and then make their way up the Texas Coast. Tarpon start to show up in good numbers in our area here in Tampa Bay by late April early May. I personally think May and June are the two best months to fish for them, although there are plenty of Tarpon that stick around post spawn through July and even into August.
Tarpon have a swim bladder that serves as a pre historic lung. This gives them the predatory advantage when oxygen levels in the water are low. It also gives them an advantage after being hooked, as with each feisty jump out of the water they are able to gulp air, giving them the extra bit of strength needed to keep you in the game.
Tarpon Fishing is a sport combining the best elements of both fishing and hunting. If you book a Tarpon trip we strictly Tarpon fish, I do not spend a few hours on Tarpon and then go look for other fish. A lot of preparation and dedication go into each of these trips. There are several different techniques used to catch these amazing fish. These differences depend on the location they are in, the water depth, the tidal current, and moon phase. On occasion, when sight casting, it is imperative to have the bait land in an exact “sweet spot”, if your bait isn’t presented properly it may very well spook the entire school away. Often times my first mate may cast for you and then hand you your rod to hook the fish. Tarpon season is the only time of year I use a first mate. I want to give you every chance possible not only to hook your Tarpon, but more importantly, to land it. Having a first mate raises your chances significantly!
These Silver Kings are extremely strong, we use a Deckgear fighting chair to give you the best advantage of landing your Tarpon. We also use medium to heavy tackle allowing you to get your fish boat side and to be released without concern for the Tarpon’s mortality.
Seeing these amazingly beautiful fish daisy chain across the water in pods of hundreds is incredible, setting up in anticipation for a strike is a heart thumping excitement I can’t wait to share with you; hooking and fighting these arielmajicians is the most intense, gratifying and unforgettable experience of a lifetime.
